The Culture of Melbourne replicates its diversified, multi-layered culture and society and the city is sometimes referred to as the "cultural and sporting capital" of Australia. Melbourne's culture is a subset of both Western culture and the culture of Australia, however it divisions into its own local culture through a number of local customs and strong themes with the Melbournian prominence on the performing arts, culinary arts and visual arts  as well as sport, sporting traditions and activity. Melbourne is also a major centre of activism, including the Australian trade union movement. The city celebrates a wide variety of major annual cultural events from local to national and international events.
