Great Barrier Reef Culture

The Great Barrier Reef, in particular the northern sector, is significant in the historic and current culture of the originals and Torres Strait Islander groups of the coastal areas of north-east Australia. This modern use of association with the Marine Park plays an essential role in the maintenance of their cultures and there is a strong spiritual connection with the ocean and its residents. The hazards of navigation in the Great Barrier Reef resulted in the building of a large number of lighthouses, which have particular historical importance. The lighthouses at Lady Elliott Island (1866) and North Reef Island (1878) still function and are fine examples of 19th century engrossed steel plate structure.
